- Citronella Grass
- Catnip
- Rosemary
- Basil
- Lemon Balm
- Lemongrass
Not only is lavender a great way to relax, unwind, and help you sleep restfully at night, but did you know that lavender also repels moths, fleas, flies, and mosquitos? You can plant a wall of lavender to help keep these insects away from your garden. Spiders do not like lavender either! You can also create a small bouquet indoors to keep them away. Also, lavender enjoys being full in the sun, making them a great choice for your Florida garden.
Did you know that Marigolds contain Pyrethrum, a compound used in many insect repellents? Marigolds prefer full sunlight also, making them another great planting choice for your Florida landscape design. This makes them a really good choice for the hot Florida sun! Marigolds repel mosquitos and insects that prey on many of your favorite plants in your garden.
Citronella oil comes from the lemongrass plant and is used in a lot of different bug sprays and candles. It has a citrusy lemony scent that mosquitos do not like. It can grow up to six feet tall making for a nice barrier or privacy buffer. Rubbing the crushed leaves on your skin can repel mosquitoes and is safer on the skin than chemicals
You can also rub catnip leaves on your skin as a great mosquito repellant. Catnip also repels cockroaches. You’re welcome! Cats may love it, but mosquitoes and cockroaches don’t.
Rosemary is great for cooking and is also great to keep mosquitos away. These beautiful plants can grow into awesome ornamental shapes and provides many uses i.e. a natural astringent.
Basil is also a great herb for cooking, and since ancient times has been used to ward off flies. This pungent herb can also keep away gnats like no-see-ums! You know, the invisible flying bloodsucking vampiric little beasts of the dusky night? Again, you’re welcome!
Lemon Balm is a great flavoring in tea, and can also be rubbed on your skin as a natural mosquito repellent. We’ve incorporated some of these great plants within many landscape designs for your home. We want to rid the garden and our loved ones of mosquitos, but without harmful chemicals and it’s a great way to help save the bees!
